A Comprehensive Guide to Cleaning Your Steam Sauna

A steam sauna is a wonderful addition to any home or spa. It provides numerous health benefits, such as relaxation, detoxification, and improved circulation. However, in order to maintain these benefits and ensure the longevity of your steam sauna, it is important to keep it clean. Regular cleaning not only keeps the sauna hygienic, but also prevents the buildup of mineral deposits and extends the life of the equipment. In this blog post, we will guide you through the steps to effectively clean your steam sauna.

What Should I Do After Each Sauna Session?

After every sauna session you should always wipe up any excess moisture with a cloth or towel to prevent any mold or bacteria from forming. Then allow it to air dry in between your sauna sessions. Ongoing maintenance of your steam sauna will help to minimize the hazards of accumulating moisture, dirt, and bacteria in your personal space.

Why is cleaning your steam sauna important?

Regular cleaning of your steam sauna is essential for several reasons. Firstly, it helps to remove any dirt, sweat, or bacteria that may have accumulated on the surfaces. This ensures a clean and hygienic environment for your sauna sessions. Secondly, cleaning helps to prevent the buildup of mineral deposits, which can clog the steam generator and reduce its efficiency. Lastly, proper cleaning and maintenance can extend the lifespan of your steam sauna, saving you money in the long run.

Step 1: Gather the necessary supplies

Before you begin cleaning your steam sauna, gather the necessary supplies. You will need a DIY sauna cleaner (1 cup of hot water, ¼ cup of vinegar and 10 drops of tea tree oil), a spray bottle, a soft cloth or sponge, and a towel for drying.

Step 2: Turn off the power

Before cleaning, make sure to unplug your steam sauna generator. This will prevent any accidents or injuries during the cleaning process.

Step 3: Clean the interior surfaces

Use a spray bottle to mix one cup of hot water, ¼ cup of vinegar and 10 drops of tea tree oil. Spray the mixture everywhere on the inside of the sauna and then use a washcloth or towel to scrub and wipe up the moisture.

Step 4: Clean the steam generator

The steam generator is the heart of your steam sauna, so it is important to keep it clean. After a month of use it is best to wash the inside out using a cloth with a mild dish detergent. If there are any hard water stains its best to use white vinegar. Be sure to thoroughly rinse the steam generator out. Regular maintenance of the steam generator will ensure its optimal performance and longevity.

Step 5: Rinse and dry

After cleaning the interior surfaces and steam generator use a clean towel to dry the surfaces, ensuring that no moisture is left behind. Moisture can lead to mold or mildew growth, so it is important to thoroughly dry the sauna after cleaning.

Step 6: Regular maintenance

In addition to regular cleaning, it is important to perform routine maintenance on your steam sauna. This includes checking the steam generator for any leaks or malfunctions, replacing any worn-out parts, and ensuring proper ventilation. Following the manufacturer's guidelines for maintenance will help to keep your steam sauna in optimal condition.

By following these steps and maintaining a regular cleaning and maintenance schedule, you can enjoy the benefits of a clean and well-functioning steam sauna for years to come. Remember, a clean sauna is a healthy sauna!

Additional Tips

We highly recommend you use purified or distilled water as tap water contains minerals and calcium salts. Once the steam cools, these magnesium and calcium salts precipitate, forming a lime buildup that is hard to clean.

We strongly DO NOT recommend the use of household chemicals. Certain chemicals can react when exposed to high temperatures as well as inhalation of fumes from household chemicals.
